Mounting an unprovoked artillery attack on the South Korean island of Yeonpyeong, North Korea has pushed international relations to the breaking point. With the civilian death toll mounting by the minute, the world stands by with bated breath, awaiting the coming of a second Korean War. The Chicago Herald prepares to send their best reporter to cover this desperate event as it spirals out of control. Only, their best also happens to be the most crass, alcoholic, and prolific womanizer the journalism world has ever seen. His name is Grant Cogar. A man so familiar with dodging shrapnel and sleeping in foxholes that it feels like sport, Cogar readily agrees to travel to Seoul—a vacation opportunity, as he sees it. But upon arrival, he quickly finds that the story he was meant to uncover has nothing to do with politics or war, but is instead hidden in the faint white powder beneath an old friend’s nose. Quietly pursuing a network of violent drug smugglers into downtown Shanghai, China, Cogar will need to use every ounce of his cunning and cleverness to outwit these hardened criminals, keep his friend and himself alive, and come away with an article his readers want to cut out and tape to their refrigerators. The first of the Cogar series, this action-adventure novel seamlessly joins hilarity with white-knuckled excitement.
Cogar Despair Nate Granzow 9781481160391 Books
Grant Cogar is the unlikeliest hero you're likely to encounter in the modern action-adventure genre. If you're despondent over the endless parade of superhuman macho warriors clogging up today's action thrillers, then Cogar will be a refreshing change of pace. A sarcastic (the droll quips are the highlight of the novel), brash, unapologetic, womanizing underdog, Grant is anything but your cookie cutter action protagonist. You definitely will not mistake him for The Executioner, The Butcher, The Specialist, The Penetrator, or any of those ilk (nothing wrong with any of those, mind you, but this is not that). As envisioned by expert wordsmith Nate Granzow, Cogar is the kind of every-man who stumbles into bad situations--like torture-happy Shanghai drug runners--and tries to use his fast-talking mouth to get out of them, resorting to fists (and, at the very end, weapons) when words just won't work and something more violent than a sharp tongue is required. The novel is briskly-paced and packed with plenty of twists and turns, but regardless of where the plot went, I was primarily interested in what Cogar would say next. There is some stellar dialogue in here, falling somewhere between Indiana Jones, Spiderman, and every crass drunk you've ever encountered. Come for the smirking one-liners, stay for the fisticuffs, and be prepared to root for a new kind of action hero.

Cogar Despair Nate Granzow 9781481160391 Books Reviews
. . .to a day when the investigative reporter was a common staple of adventure fiction. And in the character of Grant Cogar, author Nate Granzow has created perhaps the unlikeliest of heroes--a protagonist who manages to be nearly as endearing as he is seedy.
Despite his persona, you find yourself rooting for him as he tumbles from one bad situation into another one(worse), attempting to extract himself with more pluck than skill. No doubt about it, Cogar is the unluckiest man in journalism.
At its core, Cogar's Despair is a fun, overall "light" adventure story that keeps you turning the pages, although some may find that the profanity peppering Cogar's dialogue to the point of gratuitousness detracts from the enjoyment. It is also a fairly short read(well under 200 pages), which doesn't allow for the plot to be developed as fully as I might have liked. I will likely take a read of future entries in the series. Rated 3.8 stars.
Nate Granzow is no stranger to my blog. He amazed me with his debut eNovel, THE SCORPION'S NEST, and again demonstrates why he is such a solid writer with COGAR'S DESPAIR.
The work revolves around Grant Cogar, an adrenaline-junkie freelance journalist which a knack for finding bad situations and beautiful women, in that order. He finds himself in Seoul, South Korea, covering an escalation of force between the ROK and the DPRK, but at the behest of his hard partying friend, Harold Chamberlain (who is the son of the ambassador to South Korea), Cogar finds himself in Shanghai, and on the bad side of some cocaine smugglers.
Cogar's charm is that he is an everyman, in contrast to Jack Murphy's protagonist Deckard, or to my own Ben Williams. He is not a trained operator, and he has no military or law enforcement background. Grant Cogar is an ordinary man in extraordinary situations, who survives on his wit, intellect, and sheer survivability. He has all of the charm and humor of James Bond, but none of the skills, which makes his bad situations that much worse. Beneath this glib exterior is a man who cares, who has seen things but, unlike a cop or a soldier, tends to retain more of his original humanity due to a fact that he was never trained to internalize what he has seen.
Another character of note is Jessica, the unofficial nanny to Harold Chamberlain. Without giving away any spoilers, there is much more to her than meets the eye, and I loved the dynamic between her and Cogar. I am hoping to see her in future installments.
The work did have some grammatical errors, and a factual error in referring to North Korea as the People's Republic of North Korea instead of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (which threw me off when referred to as "People's Republic," as I thought Granzow was referring to Mainland China), but they were largely overshadowed by the humor and the charisma oozed from Cogar.
All in all, COGAR'S DESPAIR is an excellent read, and a strong start to a new series. Consider that two hits in the bag for Granzow.
Nate Granzlow has created an all new, very exciting action hero with the sharp wit of Fletch and the kind of raw toughness of Ian Fleming's James Bond, the book Bond without a scam of gadgetry, and hardly even a sidearm, getting past with his brains and a set of jaw busting knuckles. Cogar, like Ira Fletcher is a good reporter, getting into nasty business with a nose for trouble that uncovers all the dirt hidden in dark corners.
Grant finds himself sent to Korea to cover a shooting incident between North and South, but the real story is his old friend and gangsters.
Like Bond, Cogar takes a load of punishment before the end, but he isn't some Superman. Though, Grant can quip with Spider-Man at his best.
This is a fast paced novel, and Granzlow has a smooth voice and rich lexicon. Highly recommended.
Wow! I really like Grant Cogar - the hero of Nate Granzow's new series who reminds of my TV favorite - Archer... alcoholic, reckless, but a reluctant fighter who more likely than not will get beat up, because he puts himself in situations and places that are not common among more traditional journalists. The character reminds me of the wise-cracking protagnoists of Brain Haig (Sean Drummond) and Tim Tigner (Kyle Achilles). The book is a fast read. It is well written and hard to put down. The story involves tension between South and North Korea, and seems very plausible. Grant Cogar is a very likeable cad. And trouble seems to attract Cogar like flies to .... Well, you know. I have SCORPION'S NEST in my bedside bookstand, but wish I had the next two of the Cogar series instead. Congrat's to Nate Granzow. Great start on what I am confident will be a long, successful career.
